Alors que Drew Brees vient de signer une extension phénoménale avec les Saints en récompense de ses bons et loyaux services (battre un record, ça aide!), Victor Cruz qui a également quelques records, s’apprête à jouer en 2012 pour la modique somme de 540 000 $.
Quand on lui demande où il en est par rapport à sa situation contractuelle, il montre que ce sujet ne le préoccupe pas tant que ça:
« It’s going to be whatever my agents are working on with the organization. Whatever timing they feel is right. I’m going to go out there and take care of what my job is and that’s to go out there and play football. Whenever the contract comes, it comes. I’m not going to be sitting back, waiting for it, thinking about it, because then I won’t be focused on football. When that time comes, we’ll cross that bridge. »
Le journaliste est même allé jusqu’à lui demander si l’expérience d’Osi Umenyiora lui a apprit comment gérer la négociation de son contrat. Encore une fois, Cruz voit les choses d’une manière très simple:
« Osi is his own person so he handled his situation the way he wanted to handle it. He’s obviously had a little bit more experience with different contract situations and stuff like that. Me, personally, I just like to sit back and be quiet and let the people that I’ve hired to do so and to work on the contracts just work for me. »
Mais qu’en est il des objectifs purement sportif du receveur?
“This year I just want to go in and maintain my same play and make sure I’m staying sharp on the plays, staying sharp on my football as well as getting some of the young guys acclimated and getting them ready to go. Somebody’s got to fill that third role, whether it be an older guy like Ramses [Barden] or a younger guy like [Rueben] Randle or Jerrel Jernigan. Those guys have to be ready so it’s kind of double-duty, making sure I’m good to go, making sure I’m sharp and making sure the younger guys are getting in the playbooks.’’
L’attitude de l’ancien undrafted rookie est tout à fait louable et il a l’air d’être tout à fait concentré sur la saison 2012 (contrairement à d’autres). On espère quand même que cette fois les Giants ne le laisseront pas filer comme ce fut le cas l’année dernière avec Steve Smith.
