Kevin Gilbride: Justin Smith retient des joueurs adverses

Vous savez que je fais souvent référence à Chris Canty comme étant un bloqueur défensif. La même qualification s’applique à Justin Smith, DE des 49ers. Sauf que selon Gilbride, Justin Smith profite pleinement d’un angle mort de l’arbitrage pour commettre des holdings:

“Smith is a beast on the inside. He’s strong, he does as good a job of grabbing a hold of offensive linemen and allowing those twists to take place. He never gets called for it, so he gets away with murder.”

Par cette remarque, Gilbride tente d’attirer l’attention des arbitres sur ce point pour contrer cette stratégie des Niners et Jim Harbaugh s’en est immédiatement rendu compte.

“Kevin Gilbride’s outrageous, irrational statement regarding Justin Smith’s play is, first, an absurd analogy. Second, it is an incendiary comment targeting one of the truly exemplary players in this league. It’s obvious that the Giants coaching staff’s sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating.”

Une réaction aussi véhémente de Harbaugh montre bien que Gilbride a touché une corde sensible. Du coup Harbaugh s’insurge et tente de contrer Gilbride en sous entendant que toute décision à l’encontre des Niners sur ce point serait un manque d’impartialité des arbitres.

Mais au final, qu’en est il vraiment? Et bien Gilbride a raison: Justin Smith retient bien des OL pour les empêcher de bloquer ses coéquipiers et c’est ce que montre FootballOutsider:

« The Niners execute stunts better than any defense in the NFL. Even when the offense knows it’s coming, it can’t always stop it. San Francisco’s secret? Holding. They have a pair of top-tier defensive ends in Justin Smith, arguably the best 3-4 lineman in the league right now, and Ray McDonald, one of the game’s most underrated players. Those guys are taught to grab the left outside of the offensive guard’s jersey or the right inside of the tackle’s jersey. The umpire and referee, who are tasked with holding on the interior line, often can’t see this –- there is too much congestion in the middle of that action. They are standing in the backfield, and can’t see through the offensive linemen to get a look at the defensive end’s hands. The grabbing prevents the blockers from getting over quickly enough to pick up the stunting blitzer. »
