Comme prévu, la prévision de Thomas selon laquelle Coughlin prendrait sa retraite à la fin de la saison 2013 a été suivie d’une réponse de la part du principal intéressé qui vient contredire en bloc les propos de son joueur:
“I don’t even know how a young man would come to that statement. I approach each year the way I’ve always approached them. The energy’s flowing good. I’m excited about it, and I’m looking forward to this offseason and getting our football team together again. Maybe at some point, I’ll get the message. But it certainly isn’t right now.”
Le coach de 66 ans a insisté sur son envie de se concentrer que sur la saison 2013 et rien de plus:
« Next year is 2013, and I’m geared up for that, » Coughlin said. « Let’s go do that, and then we’ll talk about whatever else. I have two years on the contract left — with this contract. Like I say, if I’m in good health, if (his wife) Judy is in good health, I don’t see … the number isn’t … I’ve always been kind of a late-starter, if you know what I’m saying. »
Il est donc clair que pour Coughlin, la retraite n’est pas un sujet qu’il souhaite discuté, du moins publiquement mais vu son âge, on ne peut s’empêcher de penser qu’il décidera bientôt de rendre son tablier et prendre une retraite amplement mérité.
Même pour John Mara, co-propriétaire des Giants, il n’y a aucune raison de penser que Coughlin prendra bientôt sa retraite:
« I have no reason to think otherwise. He hasn’t given me any indication otherwise. This is what he does. I think he’s got too much fire left to retire at this point, but you’ll have to ask him that. »
Il n’y a que Tom Coughlin pour savoir ce que Tom Coughlin veut. Peut être veut il partir avec une 3e victoire au Super Bowl et ainsi dépasser son ancien patron Bill Parcells en nombre de titres remportés à la tête des Giants. Ce serait en effet une belle fin pour la carrière de Coughlin mais ce ne sera pas facile à réaliser.
