De ce qu’on sait, les choses n’ont pas évolué entre Victor Cruz et les Giants ces derniers temps. Mais avec les OTAs (Organized Team Activities) qui comment le 22 mai prochain pour les Giants, Eli espère que son go-to-guy sera présent:
“We get into some real practices next week so hopefully as we get into those live going-against-the-defense practices he’ll get back in so we can get back to work.”
Cependant l’absence de Cruz a ses avantages. Comme Gilbride, Eli a reconnu que le fait de ne pas avoir Cruz lors des entraînements permet à d’autres joueurs d’avoir plus d’opportunités. Pour Eli, Jerrel Jernigan doit profiter de cette opportunité pour montrer qu’il peut aider l’équipe:
« Jerrel has to also be able to help us. He has speed and skills, he’s been in the system now for a number of years. So hopefully he can step up and fill a role for us. The more talented guys you have on the team and make plays for you, the better off you will be. »
Le message destiné au joueur sélectionné lors du 3e tour de la draft 2011 ne pourrait être plus clair. Il s’agit de la 3e saison pour cette classe de 2011 et Jernigan n’a encore rien montré de valable.
Gilbride a confirmé que l’absence Cruz permettait à d’autres joueurs d’avoir plus d’opportunités. Jernigan sera donc le slot WR de l’équipe A en attendant le retour de Cruz.
Gilbride a également parlé de Louis Murphy, nouveau WR signé durant l’intersaison, comme étant un receveur dont la première mission serait de jouer à l’extérieur
« It’s a chance for him to shine and step forward and do the things that we believe he can do. … I think we want to see what Louis Murphy can do outside, but really it’s JJ inside. It’s going to be a great opportunity for him. »

Whether that means he comes in for the 3rd phase of the OTAs remains to be seen but it sounds encouraging.
